Me

Hi there, my name is Stephan Snyman. I’m known as rooiratel on most platforms.

I started this blog as a way to share things I’ve learned ‒ mostly to do with making my life easier using open source tools ‒ but sometimes I write about other things as well. As a side benefit I now have documentation for those things.

Work

I am currently working as a tech team lead / software developer in the banking and telecommunications industries. I like to make my code small, fast, submissive, and testable. I also believe it’s difficult to improve anything unless you are measuring it first, because how else are you supposed to know you made an improvement?

For more info about my work history see here.

Personal

Outside of work I typically spend my weekends in the Magaliesberg mountains; hiking, rock climbing, doing conservation work etc. This also gives me lots of oppertunities to snap photos of plants/insects/animals to contribute towards iNaturalist.

During the week I like to run (road and trail running).

I also spend a lot of time contributing to Wikimedia projects. As can be seen here. This is how I ended up writing a lot of Python and Lua code, which I don’t really use at all at my day job.

Comments

I don’t like any of the commenting systems available, and don’t like the idea of a comments section on a blog in general. If you want comments on a particular post, then link it to Reddit or Hackernews or something and comment there.
